Narrow AI vs. General AI

1. Narrow AI (Weak AI)

  • Definition: Narrow AI (also called Weak AI) is a type of artificial intelligence that is designed and trained to perform a specific task or a limited range of tasks very well.
  • It does not have general intelligence or consciousness.
  • It can’t “think” beyond its programmed function.
  • Examples:
    • Siri, Alexa (voice assistants).
    • Netflix’s recommendation system.
    • Spam filters in email.

2. General AI (Strong AI)

  • Definition: General AI (also called Strong AI or Artificial General Intelligence, AGI) is a type of artificial intelligence that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks—just like a human.
  • It can reason, solve problems, and adapt to unfamiliar situations.
  • Unlike Narrow AI, it’s not limited to one specific function.
  • It would have the ability to transfer learning from one domain to another (e.g., learning math and then applying logic skills to cooking).
  • This level of AI does not yet exist — it’s still a research goal.
  • Status: Still theoretical — no true general AI exists yet.
  • Goal: An AI that could reason, problem-solve, and make decisions in multiple fields without retraining.
